Window to the Soul

Window to the Soul

Music is the gateway to the soul. For many people, it is one of the most important aspects of life, shaping us and leaving a lasting impact. In one of my classes, we read Sonny’s Blues, and one of the main themes was how music brings people together. Concerts, for example, are among the most special experiences, surrounded by people of all ages, ethnicities, and genders who share a love of music. It’s a universal force that connects us.

One of the best ways to get to know someone is to understand their taste in music. Music evokes a wide range of emotions and heightens our feelings. Listening to a sad song can be as impactful as it was for the artist who created it. I find comfort in break-up songs, not necessarily because I am going through a break-up, but because the emotion behind the music resonates with my own experiences.

I dislike it when people judge others’ music tastes because music is subjective. Everyone experiences it differently. I try to listen to a song thoroughly before reading comments or forming an opinion, so I can truly absorb my own thoughts and feelings. I also spend a lot of time curating my playlists because each one captures a specific moment in my life. There are songs I can always return to for comfort, and hearing a song I once had on repeat during a particular time in my life brings back a flood of memories. For example, “Brazil” by Declan McKenna was a huge part of my life years ago, and when I listen to it now, I am instantly reminded of those experiences.

It’s fascinating how our music tastes evolve, reflecting how we grow as people. Right now, songs by Role Model resonate deeply with me. They mark a new chapter in my life, one I have never experienced before, and I am excited to explore it.

In the end, if you want to understand someone truly, just take a look at their Spotify or Apple Music playlist. Music reveals more about a person than words ever could.
